Traffic jam is daily problem which people face in Jakarta. The traffic jam causes a huge damage for the people. Adrianof Chaniago said that Jakarta loss Rp 43 trillion because of traffic jam. Jakarta is also predicted will face totally traffic jam in 2014.
The number of public transportation in Jakarta is small; there is only 2% of all vehicles. In the other hand, the number of private transportation is always increasing every day although the traffic jam is worse, the broad road is the same, and they need extra payment, such as fuel and vehicle maintenance. Many people moved from public transportation to private transportation because of some reasons, such as comfort, punctuality, even the prestige reason.
Some people argue that the problem is on the people’s mind. There a perception that it’s better to utilize private vehicle than to use public transportation because public transportation is Indonesia is not as good as public transportation is the other countries, such as Singapore and Hong Kong. The others think that those who utilize private transportation is not participate in reducing the traffic jam in Jakarta, they become problem with their own vehicles, and for the sake of prestige reason.
In my opinion, it’s not really important to discuss about the problem again and again without any action. For sure, I really envy with public transportation in Singapore and Hong Kong. I read the article about public transportation in Singapore and I really envy. The Government puts attention on it seriously. I’m sure if our Government could provide appropriate public transportation like what those countries do, many people in Jakarta who utilize their private transportation would be willing to use public transportation.
